Welcome to Oakhill Garden. We are an independent nursery that grows and sells directly.
Shipping Season
We normally ship beginning the 1st week of July and up until the end of September - depending on weather conditions and plant condition. We ship iris when they are dormant to lessen the shock of transplanting. This is normal procedure for all iris nurseries.
If you want them sooner please advise by adding a comment in the comment field when placing your order. We have found better success with blooming if we follow the tried and true process. Often people are eager for instant gratification but with gardening it is all a mattering of timing.
Please remember as a nursery grower, I am responsible for growing and shipping optimum plant material and these are living plants. It is not simply a matter of walking out to the warehouse shelf and picking out an item to ship. This is a very personal business between you, the nursery man, and the plant.
For those gardeners in the South West USA, including Texas and Arizona, and Nevada or Southern California, we make special cases to deliver out of the normal season because of the dry conditions you face.
But planting for all other areas of North America, it is highly recommended that you plant in the dormancy period of the plants. Especially tall-bearded iris and Siberian iris as they respond very well to transplanting after flowering.
Daylilies too, do better after flowering, but can be shipped anytime during their growing season. We try to keep your shipping prices low by shipping daylilies with iris if you have an order with both species.

Plants cannot be returned unless they are completely dead and Oakhill Garden reserves the right to replace or refund for the dead plant.
Irises are very hardy and will survive very tough conditions so that it is unlikely they are damaged during shipping.
You should plant them as soon as possible after receiving them.
We will work with you to assure that you have a great gardening experience.
Substitutions
Oakhill Gardens may substitute if the plant you ordered is unavailable due to crop failures and/or other problems. As always we will provide the more expensive variety as the substitution and provide the same color, height and characteristics. This is achievable due to the wide assortment and great number of plants that we have available.
If this is not OK then please indicate in your comments in your order that you do not want substitutions in which case we will not ship nor charge your card.

The Siberian Meadow Library
Siberian Iris bridges the bloom gap from late spring into early summer. They
thrive in cool, wet conditions and full sun, but can also tolerate some shade.
Easy-care, vigorous plant forms a large clump over the years Botanical name:
Iris siberica for more information visit our library
pages.
Iris germanica “Florentina” or Orris Root.
Iris Florentina has been in cultivation for hundreds of years and is a graceful
plant that should always be included in your English Garden. It has thick rhizomatous
roots which when dried and ground up have the delicate scent of violets. Unfortunately
it can take up to three years for the roots to become fully dry and develop
their sweet smelling scent so if you wish to make your own - be warned you will
need patience! It can then also be used as a fixative for pot pourri. Other
uses of this violet scented powdered root – It has been used for hundreds of
years in the making of soaps and perfumes, and in sachets to perfume clothes
and bed linen. Today fields of Orris irises are still grown in Italy, especially
around Florence for this same purpose. Plant description Iris Florentina is
a hardy perennial with grey/green sword shaped leaves. Reaching 2 to 3 foot
(60 -1m) it flowers in late spring and early summer. The flower stems may have
two or three branches of fragrant blooms which are of the very palest blue with
a yellow beard. Plant them with annuals especially poppies and larkspur when
their contrasting foliage will set of the more delicate leaves of the surrounding
plants. Cultivation Iris Florentina likes well drained soil in a sunny spot
and benefits from a yearly helping of compost. It is easy to grow and as long
as its roots do not sit in water it will thrive - it will even put up with partial
shade if its roots are kept well drained. Propagation Divide the roots in late
spring or early autumn. Irises are not often used as cut flowers but they look
striking and will last at least three days if picked in the early morning or
evening.

Color Photographs
Colors that you see on the web are much different at times than the real plant in your garden or even on what day you look at the plant in your garden. Light, time of day ... all these variables make color an ever changine quixotic element. Embracing the Web finds even more confusion but we are sending you the right plant. Often the description is more apt than the photographs. Most of the photos on our website are from our garden last year.
